A Zone Meeting was held on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Branch 60. The Opening Ceremonies were conducted by the Branch President, Comrade Matt MacPherson.

The Meeting opened at 7:40p.m.

The Roll was called. All Branches were present.

MOTION to deviate from the agenda was accepted.

Comrade Deputy Zone Commander introduced a guest, Helaine Ortmann to speak about the merits of all the Branches donating money to the Juravinski Cancer Centre. By this method the donation would be a worthwhile contribution to a very worthy cause. Each Branch would seek approval to use Poppy Funds for this purpose.

Suggestion-- that we launch a letter-writing campaign about the Veterans’ death allowance for funerals. Please address your M.P. and let him/her know that the Federal Government needs to raise the amount of money allowed for funerals. It is woefully low and will not allow for a dignified funeral.

A letter from the City of Quinte West-- thanking those who contributed to the fund to erect a memorial and also a plea for extra funds.

ZONE COMMANDER’S REPORT

1.      All the Branch Annual visits and Audits are complete. They went well although Branches still did not have all the information we requested. The use of unlicensed draws etc. has come up again and I have been asked to remind everyone of the blanket license to make them legal. We are also being challenged about not receiving audited lottery statements from every Branch. Ontario Command will deal with any Branches who have not complied with the request for these statements as per our agreement with the Lotteries Commission.

2.      Branch regulations have been reviewed and memos have been sent to all Branches in our Zone with requests for changes. Please use the new forms dated September 30, 2012. Please let me know the status at your Branch and forward a copy to me once Command approves them so we have a copy on file for the Branch Elections. I can also file a copy with District.

3.      B6 directory updates, any changes in your executive including people added please send Jane and me the names, addresses, phone numbers and email information so we can update the directory. Please let us know of any mistakes you notice.

4.      I have requested a Presidents report every quarter for the past 2 years (which should include an L.A. report). We are going to continue to report the names of Veterans who have passed away between District Conventions. Have it ready for me by March 10. The reports are to be December, March, June and September. Four did not comply in time for me to include them in my report.

5.      There has been a directive from Dominion Command that each formal complaint be accompanied with a personal cheque for $100.00 from the Complainant. Ontario Command has agreed with this directive as a way to eliminate petty complaints and forcing Branches to mediate these issues.

6.      The Branch surveys are all completed but it was a hard road. However we made it. This coming year please complete the form when you receive it at the Branch not when we chase you. It will be an annual request.

7.      Next month will be the Zone Election for our Zone Commander position so please make sure you have your Executive attend as the District Commander and the Deputy Commander will be here to run the election. THERE ARE NO PROXY VOTES AT THIS LEVEL OR AT DISTRICT ELECTIONS.

8.      April 5-7 is the District Convention to be held in Simcoe. WE ELECT OUR NEW DISTRICT EXECUTIVE so please get your max number of votes out. The number of voting delegates each branch is allowed is the same as the Provincial Convention (in May at Kingston).

9.      Resolutions supported at PEC meeting to go to Provincial Convention in May are:

1)      Snooker back to 15 red balls

2)      Poppy stock storage—internal 200sq.ft.@ $7=$14oo

                                       External 200sq. ft.@$3.50+$700

3)      Public speaking penalties to ass freeze time of 4 seconds.

POPPY

Comrade Robert Watson’s report stated that all Poppy reports are in and all accepted.

The concept of all Branches donating to the Juravinski Centre was strongly supported.

MEMBERSHIP

Comrade Joyce Brown urged the Branch membership committees to keep up their remittances to Command.

According to the membership site Zone B6 is not doing too badly. As of January 31^st all the branches in our zone are 90% or over in membership remittance. Congratulations to Burlington—they have 98%.

Please start a committee to make phone calls or send out reminders to those who have not paid their 2013 dyes, Wouldn’t it be nice if all the branches made it to 100%?

Zone B6 Public Relations Report – Peter Whittaker –  25^th February, 2013  

1)    Added additional District Meetings to meeting schedule for 2013-2014 – still need locations for these meetings – memo sent to Jim Chesterfield.

2)    Uploaded copy of November Zone meeting minutes to Zone web site.

3)    The page of events at local zone member branches page is out of date and cannot be updated without input of the branches themselves.  If there is no further input then I will remove this particular page from the Zone web site.

4)    Added seminar page to website and added following scheduled seminar “Succession Planning” in the Legion  that was held on 26^th January, 2013 at Stoney Creek Branch 622.

5)    We need ongoing details of Seminar type training Events held by the Legion publicized well ahead of their date so that everyone is fully aware of what they are , and when and where there to be held so that Branch Presidents who would like to use these valuable resources for training of their Branch Executive members can fully utilize them.             

6)    Please view our Zone web site and if you have something you would like to see on this site please let me know.  If no-one gives me suggestions to add to the site then they won’t get added. 

7)    At this time I do not have an up-to-date listing of Zone member branch executive members, and email addresses for them so that I can easily contact them and supply links to view the Zone web site and its contents.

Comrade Bill Eisan reported  that 28 members are in attendence.

SPORTS

Comrade Garry Spears reported that the Zone snooker tournament was won by Branch 163.

The cribbage tournament was won by Branch 622.

Zone Single winner was Comrade Darren Park (Branch 622). Doubles winners were Comrades Ray Ellis and Ron Spencer (Branch 622)

Zone darts : winning team was Branch 622 Stoney Creek.

Mixed Team Darts: winning team from Branch 36, Dundas.

MOTION: moved by Comrade Garry Spears, seconded by Comrade Don Hubbs that the fee for team darts be raised from $25 to $35. Carried.

YOUTH EDUCATION

Comrade Jackie Ralston reported that one Black and White Poster went to Provincial and no results are available at this time.

There is a problem with Public Speaking in Zone B6. For 2 years only one Branch has participated. Comrade Jackie suggested that the Branches make a concerted effort to get participants. Comrade Peter Whittaker suggested that advertising would be very valuable and everyone agreed.

The proposal was that the Zone advertise in September for the whole Youth Education Programme to be followed by a reminder in January of the Public Speaking.

LA. REPORT

Comrade Jackie Ralston has made all her inspections of the L.A. Branches. There is a Zone Meeting on March 10 at Branch 622—Meeting: 11a.m., Lunch—noon and a Fun Sports Day to follow.

The L.A. Zone Convention is on April 20, 2013 at Branch 60.

Discussion of the Juravinski project took place. Branches could target and earmark money for this cause.
