A Zone Meeting was held on Tuesday, October 26, 2012 at Branch 36, Dundas. The Opening Ceremonies were conducted by the Branch Vice President, Comrade Dawn Lewis.

The Meeting opened at 7:40p.m.

The Roll was called. All Branches were present.

MOTION to deviate from the agenda was accepted.

MINUTES

The Minutes were adopted as circulated.

CORRESPONDENCE

PIB has made significant improvements to the Provincial Command Insurance Programme. Information is available from the Secretary or the President of Branch.

Membership information is available.

Russell Ray Comedy group will entertain at a Branch with proceeds (after expenses) going to the Homeless Veterans project.

There is a Repatriation Memorial being built at the beginning of the Veterans Highway on the Bay of Quinte near Trenton. Poppy funds may be used for this project.

ZONE COMMANDER’S REPORT

1.      We have started our Annual visits and Branch Audits, I have handed each President a copy of the audit so please ensure the data required is available when we arrive as most are not prepared. If you did not get a copy see me after the meeting.

2.      Remembrance day planning should be well at hand and I wish you all the best in the execution of your Branches plan.

3.      The Poppy distribution is in full swing and we are looking forward to an excellent campaign please ensure you are reporting activities at all General Meetings as it shows your members what the Poppy Funds  go towards.

4.      Branch Executive should be looking at members worthy of Life Membership, MSM and Palm Awards early so the paper work can be processed. Please go on line each time and ensure you use the current form. We have 10 submissions again this year so far.

5.      Branch regulations have been reviewed and memos from Brain have been sent to all Branches in our Zone with requests for changes. To date only 1 Branch has had them accepted, Branch 315. There are new forms out at the end of the October so if yours are not already submitted please use the new form. Please let me know the status at your Branch and forward a copy to me so we have them on file for the Branch Elections..

6.      I will be attending the Provincial Executive Council meeting in early November so if you have any concerns you want me to address then forward them to me by E-Mail. One of the issues is that Break open tickets appear to have the incorrect count in boxes so if you have an example I would like to get the details.

7.      B6 Zone directory updates , any changes in your executive including people added please send Jane and myself the names, addresses, phone numbers and E-Mail info so we can update the directory. If you see any mistakes also let me know.

8.       I am requesting a Presidents report every quarter for the next 2 years, (Which should include a L.A.       update as well) prior to District Council and Convention meetings. I require this to give a meaningful report on our Zones activities. We are also going to carry on with the practice of reading out names of Veterans who passing away between District Conventions. The dates for these where in the last meeting minutes that is Dec., March, June and Sept. So please prepare it for me by Dec15 for my next report. The response this time was terrible as did not hear from 5 Branches in time to include them in my report.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

POPPY

Comrade Robert Watson stated that all Branches should report Poppy balances every General Meeting. Poppy status reports are due.

He will be visiting the remainder of the Branches with Comrades Jim Chesterfield and John Murphy to inspect the Poppy Chair and to offer advice and guidance.

The Braches have contacted schools for their poppy requirements and also told the schools about the poster and literary contest.

Boundaries do not appear to be a problem this year.

If a Branch needs poppies, boxes or other supplies call Comrade Robert or another Branch.

Anyone who would be interested in Vice Chair position in Zone, please contact Robert.

MEMBERSHIP

Comrade Joyce Brown stated that the Early Bird Campaign which started September 1^st   is still in full swing. Branches should be aware that the per capita tax has changed.

All branch numbers are down for membership. Now is an ideal time to recruit new members as the Branches are all busy at this time of year. Get the word out of what we do or can do for the community.

1)    Updated on the Zone website Zone Executive members contact information

2)    Added copy of September Zone meeting minutes to Zone web site.

3)    Updated the Zone website - Updated Zone, District and Provincial meeting schedule for September   2012 to May 2013 with meeting locations and times, along with

4)    I have looked at potential changes to the Zone B6 web site and they include:

Adding a page to publicize Legion Training Events which would be helpful to those area Branch Executive members that (a) are aware of them, and (b) actually attend them.               

5)      Built a page on the Zone web site listing events taking place at Zone member Branches 36, 58, 60, 163 for July and August.  Please visit this page and forward any events taking place at your branch so that they can be added to this page, as it is sadly out of date at this time.  Member branches should forward events and details of their fund raising events to the Zone PRO Peter Whittaker at pjwmew1@hotmail.com

6)    I have added a link to the Legion Magazine to the zone home page menu.

  7)      I have added a link to the Member Benefits Package Page at Ontario Legion to the zone page.

  8)   I have built pages listing the Zone, District and Provincial Sports Tournament Schedules listing    the Events, Event Dates, Host Branch names and deadline dates.

In Comrade Bill Eisan’s absence it was noted that 32 members attended.

SPORTS

Comrade Gary Spears reported that he held a meeting of the Sports Officers. Schedules were passed out.

Entry fees will not increase due to the good attendance at the competitions.

YOUTH EDUCATION

Comrade Jackie Ralston stated that only 1^st place winners advance to Zone.

Zone B6—Districe Council, July, 2014       Convention, September, 2014. Please think about it.

Question about Poppy Funds going to build a monument?

Discussion was held about Veterans applying for assistance at a Branch. It was suggested that the first step is to see if they qualify for help from VAC and after that they should approach the Poppy Chair.

Bursaries also were discussed.

Our financial advisor, Comrade Gary Titley, stated that Branches should read the current Officers’ Manual with a view to getting more funds from Nevada to help with maintenance costs. He will give advice to any Branch who asks.

The draw was made for the good and welfare.

The next meeting will be held at Branch 58, Hamilton on November 26 at 7:30p.m.
